Key Information

  • The Adam Practice provides a minimally invasive, non-scalpel vasectomy at its Lifeboat Quay site.
  • The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and usually takes about 15 minutes.
  • Before attending, shave the scrotum and wear or bring tight-fitting underwear.
  • No skin stitches are normally needed, and the small opening usually heals naturally over the following days.

How Should I Prepare?

  • Please follow the preparation instructions you have been given.
  • Before attending, shave the scrotum so that hair does not get in the way during the procedure.
  • Please wear or bring tight-fitting underwear to support the area after the procedure.

What Happens Before the Procedure?

When you arrive, the clinician will examine you to make sure both tubes can be clearly identified before starting.

The skin is then cleaned with an antiseptic solution. This can sting a little but helps reduce the risk of infection.

A very fine needle is used to numb the area with local anaesthetic.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Once the area is numb, a small opening is made in the skin to reach the tubes that carry sperm.

A small section of each tube is removed and the tubes are sealed to stop sperm from leaving the body.

Music is usually playing and the team will talk with you about other things to help you relax. Most patients are surprised by how simple and pain-free the procedure is.

What Happens Afterwards?

A small piece of gauze is placed inside your underwear. Tight-fitting underwear provides gentle pressure and supports the area.

There is normally no need for a stitch in the skin. The opening usually heals naturally over the next few days.
