What is a Patient Participation Group? (PPG)

A  Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a joint venture between a general practice and its patient population. 

Working in partnership with the practice, a PPG can help to make services more user-friendly and improve patient experience.  By identifying issues that are important to patients and by responding to any new initiatives, it can improve and influence the way in which services are planned and delivered, and increase patients’ confidence in the healthcare provided.  A PPG can support the practice when it is faced with impositions from outside sources which may not have a beneficial impact on the practice or its patients. 

The Adam Practice PPG 

The Adam Practice has a virtual PPG – this means that all contact with the group is done electronically via email without the need for face-to-face meetings.  The practice decided to create the group in this way due to a combination of our size and the geographical spread of the sites to enable all our patients to have a voice.  We also understand that many patients are unable to attend meetings but would still like a say in what we do. 

This Group plays a valuable part in the future development of the practice and is used as a resource to provide feedback on the range and quality of the services and also to generate ideas for areas to improve. 

Our aim is to work with as many different patients as possible and to make sure that the group is as fair a representation of our entire patient population as we can achieve.

What is involved?

The main role of the Group is to give us feedback on any areas where we are seeking to improve or alter services.  These alterations could be due to NHS involvement, a suggestion or complaint from a patient, an internal suggestion or an idea from a PPG member.   

Emails are sent out to the group on at least a monthly basis.  These are usually either about information\ideas needed or contain the latest NAPP e-bulletin (see; www.napp.org.uk

How do you join? 

We are always actively recruiting patients for the group.
